Pacific Local Empowerment Programme Manager

Background

The BirdLife Pacific Secretariat in Suva, Fiji is searching for a passionate and experienced individual to lead the development of a new locally-led conservation. The BirdLife Pacific Partnership is based in Fiji, Cook Islands, Palau, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Australia and New Zealand.

BirdLife recognises that working with people locally is critical to effective long-term and sustainable conservation in the region. Consequently, we havedeveloped the Local Empowerment Programme with the vision that: ‘Local organisations at critical sites for biodiversity are empowered to effectively conserve, manage and defend their sites, so that biodiversity values and benefits are provided in the long term. This benefits not just the local community but also delivers nationally and globally important conservation benefits.

The new post will manage the Pacific Local Empowerment Programme, provide support for BirdLife Partners working with Local Conservation Groups, and strengthen and expand networks of local organisations. The Pacific Local Empowerment ProgrammeManager will also help communicate this work more effectively to donors and decision-makers, to increase its impact, and thereby leverage more resources for this essential aspect of BirdLife’s activities within the region.

Initially the role is a fixed-term contract from 2ndApril 2013 until 31st Dec 2015 (two years and nine months) with the potential for extension as new project funding is secured. It will be based within the BirdLife Pacific Secretariat office in Suva, Fiji.
